StarCraft is the best selling PC game of year 1998, which grew in its popularity primarily because of the new benchmark that the game had set with respect to real-time strategy games. The game is set in 26th century on the grounds of a remote place in Milky Way galaxy. Three enormous species fighting for supremacy in this distant part, forms the main storyline of StarCraft. The species are: The Protoss which is a race of humanoid religious warriors, The Zerg which form the insectoids race and The Terrans which consists of humans exiled from Earth due to over population.
When a company upgrades a popular video game it necessarily means that they have to raise the bar. This means that they have to do more than introduce a few new NPCs or change a few names. Features have to be enhanced, bugs have to be fixed and the game play has to come up to a whole new level. This is especially true of real time simulation games. The pending release of StarCraft II, (July, 2010), Blizzard has done exactly that. New features have translated into much faster game play and a much easier way to interact with other players during battle and a much more time sensitive realism than you can find in other games of its type.
The number of abilities that each of your units has is directly related to your success on the battlefield in any real time strategy game. In a real battle for instance, terrain can be a major obstacle. Placing a base in an area that is surrounded by high cliffs with just one entrance can make the base very hard to attack with standard units. If you want to change the dynamics of a battlefield all you have to do is to add units that function regardless of certain terrains problems. A great real world example is the United States introduction of the helicopter in the jungles of Southeast Asia.
The reason why Starcraft I has been popular and continued to be popular is that it had so much atmosphere, with a good balance of humor thrown in; making it very enjoyable, indeed, to both casual and hardcore players.
During the 26th century, on a remote place in the galaxy of milky way, started the war amongst three species fighting for dominance – the Zerg – a race of horrific insectoids bent upon infesting all the races, the Protoss – a humanoid race with vast psionic power and the Terrans a race of humans exiled from Earth capable of adapting to changes quickly. As these races fought against one another using up their units and forces, no race could conquer the other. However damage was done and races have been silently restructuring themselves for four years. Now, four years after the Brood War concluded, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty marks its beginning on the land of Mar Sara. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is set to release on July 27, 2010 worldwide with its expansion packs ‘Heart of the Swarm’ (the zerg campaign) and ‘Legacy of the void’ (the protoss campaign) scheduled to be released closely behind. These three campaigns form StarCraft II Trilogy and are the much anticipated pack of games when it comes to real-time strategy games genre.
